Thursday 12th September

A bit of a non event day as the weather was not conducive to much outdoor activities. Rain and wind, apparently remnants of hurricane Gabrielle. A bit of a problem with the “wet room” shower as it seems it doesn’t drain away as well as it should and the tide was coming up in the en suite as well as in the river outside!  We had an excellent breakfast overlooking the river before retiring to our room for a couple of hours. The room is so spacious and comfortable, it is such an easy space to relax in. A break in the weather encouraged us go out and explore a little. I wanted to go to half moon bay which I remembered from long ago. Sadly not quite as picturesque as the name would suggest. It’s proximity to the nuclear power station, which of course wasn’t there in the late 1940’s, and the ferry terminal, which is so much bigger, have dramatically changed the area. We drove to Heysham village and down the Main Street, which seemed so much smaller than I remembered , before continuing into Morecambe and driving all the way along the front towards Hest Bank. I realise it wasn’t the best day to see it, grey and wet,  but it was so sad to see how it has deteriorated. We decided that there wasn’t a lot of point hanging around in this weather so drove back and on to Sainsbury’s to get a snack for lunch and  filled up the car with petrol. Back to base where we relaxed until it was time to have our evening meal. By this time the rain had stopped and we were able to have a good view of the river whilst we ate.
