Wednesday 11th September


We started the day with a very good breakfast buffet at the hotel before checking out and putting our belongings in the car. Time for a final look around even though it was raining slightly. We took a different direction along the wall to the river Dee. Photo opportunity here for Dee by the river Dee!
Then a walk through the Roman gardens to the amphitheater by which time the rain had stopped.




All too soon it was time to say goodbye to Chester and head to Tarleton where we had a date to meet up with Viv a friend from my teenage years when we both lived in Bradford. Since then we have both moved around a lot but always kept in touch. We were meeting in a cafe in The Courtyard complex in Tarleton which is between our route north and her home in Southport.A light lunch and lots of chat and we said our goodbyes before we drove off to our next stop Morecambe. I must explain my desire to visit Morecambe! It was always known as Bradford by the sea and a place where I spent many holidays from being about 6years old. So many memories. In those days it was a thriving seaside resort but it has sadly gone downhill although now it is starting to have a bit of a renaissance or so I am told, First impressions were not good! It does look very run down but the renovated Midland hotel is a cheering sight. http://midlandhotel.org/
We parked the car and had a walk along the the prom, a bit of a bracing wind blowing but not cold. The tide was well out and the Lakeland hills over the bay were just visible. The old Central pier had burnt down many years ago but the old clock tower was one of the few familiar sights still there as was the Winter Gardens theatre which is being renovated.

I’m finding hard to orientate myself here as the roads are so busy and there are either many new roads or roads that have been widened. 
The accommodation here is a self contained motel type building at the rear of the pub and it is very good. We have a sitting area and 2 beds, very spacious and comfortable. 
We had our evening meal overlooking the river Lune which is tidal.

Time to leave the north and head back south. We went into Shipley and had a bacon sandwich and coffee at Greggs before leaving. We decided to break the journey and miss the very busy motorways on our return. Our overnight stay was to be in Tamworth. We went via Huddersfield, Holmefirth, and Holme Moss where we stopped to eat our sandwich lunch and admire the view. It was a clear sunny day which is quite unusual up there! Then on through the Peak District, Buxton and to our overnight resting place at the Tamworth Arms. An unprepossessing pub with some surprisingly comfortable rooms at the rear,  we had a choice of beds, one double and 2 singles in ours ! Once we had installed ourselves we had a walk to look at the castle and river before deciding to eat at the Blue Water Indian restaurant. This turned out to be a very good choice, both the food and the service were excellent.

Tuesday 17th September

We walked into Shipley, not far, and had breakfast at the market cafe. Then to a shop which sold old vinyl records. N has a lot of 70’s, 80’s records which he is hoping to sell. Chap there wanted to see them so I went back for the car and drove round with them. All to no avail, he made a very low offer so they will remain with us for the time being. Drove then to the car park at Salts Mill and had a wander round there looking first at the David Hockney exhibition of his East Yorkshire works and then watching a film of the history of the mill. I am so pleased that it hasn’t been demolished and that the village of Saltaire has become a UNESCO world heritage site. Monday 23rd September.

A wet day for our last day here. The morning was taken up by a shop at Tesco’s for supplies to bring home. There was a break in the weather after lunch so we were able to get the shopping sorted out and packed in the boot. Boot is jam packed full! Then suitcase packed and as much as possible put in the car ready for departure tomorrow. We went round to Steve’s, after he had picked up Lauren and Josh, to say goodbye. We didn’t stay long, I can’t bear saying goodbye and usually collapse in tears as I did. ,
